AmaSintra Christening reinforces DouroAzul’s leadership

On April 17, DouroAzul celebrated a new milestone in its history by christening the AmaSintra, the 12th river cruise ship in its fleet. The ceremony took place at Cais da Escarpa in Vila Nova de Gaia and was attended by Jenn Lee, President of Vacation Planners, who assumed the role of godmother of the ship.
Entirely built in Portugal, the AmaSintra stands as a symbol of innovation, sophistication, and commitment to excellence, reinforcing DouroAzul’s nautical tradition and leadership in the river tourism sector.
With a capacity for 104 passengers across 52 cabins, the ship combines functional and comfortable design with eco-efficient technology, allowing for optimized energy consumption and reduced emissions. It follows the aesthetic line of its fleet sister, the AmaDouro, maintaining a strong connection to Portuguese nautical heritage.
For DouroAzul, this christening symbolizes more than just the launch of a new ship: it reflects the company’s growth strategy, ongoing commitment to sustainability, and support for the economic development of the Douro region. The project also represents active engagement with local communities, fostering partnerships with producers, artisans, guides, and other regional economic players.
According to Mário Ferreira, President of DouroAzul, “the launch of the AmaSintra marks an important milestone for DouroAzul and the river tourism sector in Portugal. It is a project with real impact on the economy, people, and the region.”
This fleet expansion also strengthens DouroAzul’s international presence, particularly in the North American market, through the deepening of its strategic partnership with operator AmaWaterways.
The AmaSintra is already sailing as a new ambassador of the Douro, carrying on board the excellence of Portuguese river tourism.
